Things to do:
  • The beach is a slide down the dune.
  • During low tide you can snorkel the reef.
  • The sea is also calm enough for paddling.
  • From June to October, you should have whale sightings.
  • Scuba diving / snorkelling at Jay’s Pro Dive Centre in Guinjata – about 5km down the beach or 15 minutes by car. They are Padi accredited and offer courses in the dive pool.
  • Guinjata also has a few bars / restaurants as well as a market and hosts an annual sports fishing competition around June.

  • Tofo towards the north, is always worth a visit with numerous beach front restaurants, bars and large market on the beach with many of the paintings, carvings and batiques in the house coming from this market. The town also has operators offering everything from surfing / kitesurfing / lessons, deep-sea game fishing excursions, scuba diving to Manta or one of the reefs nearby or free-diving.
  • For the artistic, and if it rains, they can help us complete our mosaic from bottle tops, all unfortunately collected from the beach below.
  • Inhambane, the capital of the area, also offers a wealth of history. Restaurants and banks make up the feel of the city. Taking a dhow across the bay to Maxixe is also a valuable experience, using crafts that the locals have been using for decades. Perhaps having lunch there before returning – tide dependant.

Shopping & amenities:
  • In Guinjata there is a petrol station, bakery and small local supermarket that can supply you with your basic needs.  Airtime can also be bought from the local vendor. Or Nelson.
  • There are two shopping centres roughly 40min drive on the backroad that will offer you most of what you should need.  The Spar Supermarket has a great butchery on the same premises and Yum-Yum has a good fresh produce section and does online orders and deliveries.

Track logs in various formats can be supplied.  Taking the backroad to Tofo - tracks for Africa is useful, especially if you are nervous about following the jeep track and getting lost - is interesting and you will miss the main entrance to Inhambane, which depending on your timing, can be busy / congested.
